Nu har vi kommit till den tid på våren när vi lider stor brist på utrymme. I alla upptänkliga vrår finns det plantor i alla stadier av tillväxt. Än så länge är det för osäkert att sätta ut plantorna i växthusen, dels är det fortfarande kalla nätter med risk för frost, dels har vi inte färdigställt vårt största växthus odlingsyta. I detta skall de pallkragar som husmor ytbehandlade förra året placeras ut och fyllas med jord. Mellan raderna med pallkragar skall markväv placeras för att undvika oönskad växtlighet (läs ogräs). Innan detta har gjorts finns det plantor överallt. Fattar ni vad krukor det går åt och vad plats det kräver?
Now we have come to the time in the spring when we suffer a great lack of space. In every imaginable nook and cranny there are plants in every stage of growth. So far, it is too uncertain to put the plants out in the greenhouses, on the one hand there are still cold nights with the risk of frost, and on the other hand we have not completed our largest greenhouse growing area. In this, the pallet collars that the housewife surface-treated last year are to be placed out and filled with soil. Parallellt med växtodling pågår tvätt av garn. Garn i stora mängder som skall färgas för att så småningom kunna vävas till plädar. Tvätt av ullgarn tar tid och plats och har man begränsat utrymme i tvättstugan gäller förtätning.

Fyra nyanser av naturfärgat garn är redo för att färgas i härliga färger. För färgning av så stora mängder får man ta till stora grytor. Min största är en vedeldad pannmur av det slag som i gamla tider användes som tvättgryta. Den klarar många härvor garn samtidigt.
Four shades of natural colored yarn are ready to be dyed in lovely colors. For dyeing such large quantities, you have to resort to large pots. My largest is a wood-fired boiler of the kind that was used as a washing pot in the old days. It can handle many skeins.

Våren innebär ett intensivt arbete med planering av årets skörd. I år har planeringen varit extra omfattande då våra gamla fruktträd med åren har dukat under för tidens tand. Nu återstår bara tre gamla äppleträd. Vi måste alltså förnya beståndet för att överhuvudtaget få njuta av en fruktskörd. Sagt och gjort. För någon vecka sedan åkte vi till vår huvudleverantör av växter med lista på de träd vi sett ut som skulle passa i vår fruktträdgård. Vi for därifrån med släpkärran laddad med sju äppleträd, ett päronträd och ett plommonträd.
Tänkt placering i en solig västsluttning, med icke föraktlig lutning, förbereddes med djupa hål. Jorden grundgödslades och blandades med ny planteringsjord och varje träd fick sin nya, noggrant förberedda, placering med tanke växtsätt och skördetid. Vi valde träd anpassade för vår växtzon. Vi finns två mil innanför västkusten men vårt läge gränsar till sydsvenska (småländska) höglandet med det kargare klimat som detta leder till. De träd vi valde är framför allt träd med höst- och vinterfrukt. För ordningens och pollineringens skull valde vi också ett träd med tidig frukt som är ätbar under en mycket kort period i augusti.
Springis a busy time with planning of what to grow in the garden. This year the planning has become more intense . The old trees in the garden has become too old to set fruit. There are only three of them left so we have to have some new ones to be able to enjoy our own fruit. Some weeks ago we went to our market-garden bringing a list with trees suitable for our garden. We left the market-garden with seven apple trees, one pear tree and a plum tree.
We had planned to place them in a slope to the west and dug deep holes to place them in. The soil were prepared with fertilizer and we placed every tree depending of it’s way to grow and when the fruit is ready to pick. We chose trees for the zone we live in. We live about thirteen miles from the Swedish west cost but we also are near the southern Swedish highland with it’s colder climat. We chose mostly fruit to eat in fall and winter but also one kind that we can eat in august.

Uppdrivning av växter pågår i full skala inomhus. Belysning med lysrör anpassade för växter har satts upp på alla tillgängliga ställen i huset och i dagsläget börjar det bli fullt. Alla plantor har nu satt fart efter att starten blev minst sagt knagglig. Den jord vi använde för starten visade sig i stället hämma tillväxten och fick efter några veckor bytas ut mot ny jord. Efter ytterligare några veckor kunde vi sakta se att plantorna återhämtat sig och sakta men säkert börjat att växa. Nu behöver många av dem ut på sin slutliga plats framför allt i växthusen. Frågan är om man skall kunna lita på att alla klarar den fortfarande låga nattemperaturen.
We grow plants full scale indoors. Everywhere in the house there are fluorecent lamps to helpt he plants grow. They had a troublesome start with defect soil that had to be replaced. After a couple of weeks the plants have regain there strenght and started to grow. Now they have become too big for indoor growing and have to be put in the greenhouses to grow further. But we are a little bit worried about the temperature at nights that still are low.

För att få plats med alla plantor är det renovering av växthus på gång. Vårt stora växthus behövde ny färg på bågarna som är vanligt järn. Ny plast är också ett måste. Innan dess skall gräset, som vuxit sig starkt, bort från odlingsytan och denna skall kompletteras med pallkragar istället. Helgen som gått har använts för målningsarbete. Nu fortsätter arbetet med nya dörrar innan plasten skall på.
To have place for all plants we renovate our greenhouses. The biggest greenhouse needed new paint, the bows are plain iron. It will also have new covering. Before that we have to remove the grass that flourish and instead we are going to use pall collars for our plants to grow in. This weekend we have painted the bows. The week continues with making new doors before we cover the greenhouse with PE/EVA plastic (polyethylen)

Av de mindre växthusen är bågväxthuset färdigt att tas i bruk. Vårt andra mindre växthus skall få ny färg och taket skall förnyas. Den korrugerade takplasten har i vissa delar suttit på sedan 1995. De delar som byttes ut har inte klarat kvalitetskraven och därför skall hela taket bytas.
One of our smaller greenhouses can be used immediately. The other will have new paint and new roof. That material has been on the greenhouse since 1995, only some parts has been changed. The newer parts has not withstand the wether and we’ll change the roof completely.

Och medan våren gör sitt arbete med att värma upp jord och luft, kan vi njuta av mååånga gula blommor.
And during the time that spring do it’s work to warm up the soil and the air, we can enjoy the huge amount of yellow flowers in the grass.
Nu börjar dagarna bli längre och solen värmer gott om man befinner sig i lä för vinden. Nätterna är fortfarande kalla med temperaturer under noll. Samtidigt med att man återigen får hopp om ännu en vår och sommar, börjar förberedelserna för kommande odlingar, både utomhus och i växthus. I år har vi startat med chili, paprikor, aubergine, kryddväxter och några blomsorter bara för att lysa upp grönskan en bit.
The days are getting longer and the sun is warming at least if you are sheltered from the wind. The nights are still cold with temperature below zero C. But at the same time there is onces again hope for another spring and summer, and we are beginning our future cultivations, for both outdoors and in greenhouses. This year we have started with chili, peppers, eggplant, herbs and some kind of flowers just to light up the greenary a bit.

Alla växter får sin första plats under växtbelysningen som är provisoriskt upphängd över vårt köksbord. När växterna kommit igång flyttas de till en något svalare plats, med belysning, i vår källare – sista anhalten innan utplantering i växthusen eller på friland.
All plants get their first place under the plant lighting, which is temporarily hung over our kitchen table. When the plants have started, they are moved to a slightly cooler place, with lighting, in our basement – the last stop before planting in the greenhouses or outdoors.
Vår innebär också att arbetet med att snygga upp i trädgården tar fart. Först i kön stod en inklippning av våra vinstockar. Denna gång en radikal sådan eftersom planket som stockarna lutat sig mot har gjort sitt och måste bytas ut. Vi skall i stället sätta nät i två rader för att också kunna flytta ett par vinstockar som funnits på annan plats men inte riktigt hittat sin själ där. Också vårt största äppleträd, som varje år (nästan) förser oss med äpplen för äpplemos, behövde ha en rejäl ansning för att komma till rätta med alla upprättstående skott. Skott som står rakt upp ger ingen frukt. Dessutom behövde vi ta bort alla grenar som vuxit så att de korsade andra grenar. Enligt gamla odlare skall man kunna kasta sin hatt genom trädets krona när beskärningen är gjord. Om det fungerar har vi inte provat, men man kan skåda ljuset.
Spring also means that the work of tidying up the garden is gaining momentum. First in line was a cutting of our vines. This time a radical one because the fence that the vine leaned against has done its thing and must be replaced. We will instead put nets in two rows to also be able to move a couple of vines that have been in another place but have not really found their soul there. Even our largest apple tree, which every year (almost) supplies us with apples for apple sauce, needed a good deal of care to come to terms with all the upright shoots. Shoots that stand straight up do not bear fruit. In addition, we needed to remove all the branches that had grown so they crossed other branches. According to old growers, you should be able to throw your hat through the crown of the tree when the pruning is done. We have not tried if it works, but you can see the light.

Under ett par dag har man kunnat se undertecknad i sluttningen ovanför huset, där fåren tidigare betade, framåtböjd med sekatören i ett fast grepp för att med ett säkert klipp ta bort alla fort växande grenar som genom ett trollslag har fyllt hagen sedan dess. Eftersom vi har slutat med får är det vi tvåbenta som får offra oss och göra deras förtjänstfulla arbete. Det är inte utan att jag saknar fåren, framför allt nu i lamningstider. Å andra sidan kan vi idag lämna gården för flera dagar om vi så vill.
For a couple of days you have been able to see me on the slope above the house, where the sheep previously grazed, bent forward with the secateurs in a firm grip to remove all fast-growing branches that have filled the pasture since then. Since we have stopped breeding sheep, it is us the two-legged humans, who must sacrifice ourselves and do the sheep’s praiseworthywork. I miss the sheep now and then, especially now in times of lambing. On the other hand, today we can leave the farm for several days if we want to.
